In Jan 1961 the squadron received aircraft 54-1637. This was an early C-130A with the blunt APS-42 radome, the “Roman Nose” appearance. This was a normal cargo plane used for flight training & hauling cargo and mechanics to Incirlik Air Base, Turkey. It was called “Rudolph” for its bright shiny nose.
In late 1964 the aircraft had the blunt APS-42 radome replaced with the APN-59 radome, the “Pinocchio nose” configuration with a radar navigator position installed (two navigator positions to be the same as the reconnaissance C-130s for training) and standard underwing fuel tanks installed. This aircraft was used in 1965 in the Black Sea to help search for a 7407th RB-57F that had gone down, . Other than that, the aircraft was used only for training and/or cargo. The aircraft left the squadron in January 1972. |
